Abstract

This research is entitled  “A Study of Propagating Buddhism of Phramangkolvuthi  (khruang  Subhaddo) which aimed three study objectives including 1) to study the method and result of Buddhism propagation from Buddha period to present, 2) to study the method of Buddhism propagation of Phramongkolvuthi (Krueang Subhaddo), and 3) to study the result of Buddhism propagation of Phramonkolvuthi (Krueang Subhaddo). This research is a qualitative research using documents and field research by interviewing.

This study found that;

Method of Buddhism propagation in Buddha period was individually and differently applied to social environment through each local rite and ritual. Buddha strategically and suitably used the right method of teaching to the right person, place and opportunity through precise words in depth with loving-kindness and compassion that benefited the followers. For the propagation, Buddha applied various techniques and methods in relation to each person. The aim of the teaching was to reasonably enlightening the listeners. The principles and methods of teachings were related to the difference of intellectual level of the listeners and practitioners. The teaching was held with the three principles of benefits in the present day, future day and the most absolute benefit was cessation of suffering. The propagation of Buddhism includes 3 methods; 1) dharma dialogue mostly used by Buddha, that the listeners had opportunities to express their opinions,               2) explanation was generally used when innumerable listeners with basic knowledge joined, and 3) selectively chose direct questions and answered without any condition. The question was answerable in itself. In addition, the immediate disciples of Buddha had different techniques, for example, Phramahacassapa emphasized conservation of Buddha’s teachings, Phrasaributra taught by friendship building, Phraassaji showed his own deeds as shining examples for others to follow.

Phramongkolvuthi (Krueang Subhaddo) used 5 propagating methods including preaching the Buddha dharma, narration of dharma, teaching strategy, metaphor, northeastern old sayings suitable for listeners.

Phramongkolvuthi’s method and result of Buddhism propagation was immensely successful for example; the listeners are more committed to Buddhism. They are of good behavior, aware of morality and ethics, sharing self-benefit for others, intellectually considerate, applying dharma in daily life. The listeners and practitioners truly understand the dharma. All Phramongkolvuthi’s preaching was published in various media such as CD record, video and books on history of dharma on his birthday anniversary, etc.
