A Comparative Study of Ovadapatimokkha in Buddhism and the Sermon on the Mount in Christianity

Abstract

ABSTRACT

This research has three objectives namely, 1) to study of Ovadapatimokkha in Buddhism, 2) to study of the Sermon on the Mount in Christianity, and 3) to comparatively study the Ovadapatimokkha and the Sermon on the Mount. It is studied from religious scriptures, texts, documents of research. The result of study is found that :-

Ovadapatimokkha is the main doctrine and the principle of administration of Sangha Community, e.g., A) The four ideologies, they are, 1) patience, 2) Nibbāna, 3) not hurt, 4) non-violence. B) The three principles, e.g., 1) not doing any bad deeds, 2) to cultivate good, and 3) to purify one’s own mind. The methods of practice for the propagator are 1) Not saying bad against others, 2) Not harming others,              3) restraining in regard to the Discipline, 4) Moderation in eating food, 5) Lying and sitting in the silent and peaceful place, and 6) Keeping an effort in mind for the cessation of defilements and transcendence of suffering. 

The Sermon on the Mount is the new mind’s objects of the Kingdom of God. That is, A) Ideologies the Kingdom of God setting in the human’s mind and entering the deathless life after death by God’s will (decide) deciding. B) The Principles e.g. 1) the mind’s object along which Son of the Kingdom of God should be in the right way, 2) the way of following the law and tradition of Jew completely such as generosity etc., 3) leaving from prosperity, 4) attitude to humanhood, is the helping or suggestion to others, which should be considered. And C) The method of Christianity e.g. the entering to the Kingdom of God, is the requisition for human to decide firmly.   

From the study of value of Ovadapatimokkha and the Sermon on the Mount it is found out that the belong to the same view, it is the development of man to be complete human which is the highest goal of religion, by the promotion of peace in the society, giving and supporting the world. The different view is that Buddhism teaches about Kamma, one will be good or bad by their own action, and the ultimate goal is enlightenment or Nibbāna, but Christianity believes in God, thus, the following of Commandments of God and the highest goal is entering the Kingdom of God.
