Abstract

ABSTRACT

This is the documentary research, it is of three objectives namely, 1) to study of the last Sermon of Buddha, 2) to study of the Sermon of Jesus during the Last Supper, and 3) to comparatively study of the Last Sermon of Buddha and the Sermon of Jesus during the Last Supper. The result of study is found that:-

The last Sermon of Buddha is the heritage doctrine which Buddha had given in His last life before his passing away. There are three main points, e.g., diligence, consideration of the truth of mental formations which is the cause of suffering, and to hurry doing duty which is cessation of suffering. The way is the development of the four Foundations of Mindfulness, setting oneself in the diligence is to be always mindful or not let mindfulness be neglected, using the four Noble Truths for destroying suffering and setting oneself in the Eightfold Path to destroy defilements until one can be able to attain Nibbāna finally.

The Sermon of Jesus during the last Supper is the heritage teaching that Jesus had also taught, although it is not the last sermon, but it is the most importance. There are three main points: teaching of love, pointing to sin which is from lacking of love and following the Ten Commandments. It is concluded into two main points: to love God deeply and to love all men as oneself. When one who practices important Commandment, he will live with God in the Kingdom of Heaven forever.

From the study of detail of two Sermons, it is found out that the main doctrine which two founders of the religious had given to be heritage of their people, for practice for the ending of suffering and appearance of sin. Then, the point of difference is just the name and the detail of explanation only. However, Buddha has taught diligence to Buddhist practicing for liberate suffering because He has loving-kindness to his Buddhist people, He wishes Buddhist people to be free from suffering. Jesus has taught love to Christian practicing for wiping sin out because He also wishes Christian live in the way of diligence.
