ABSTRACT

 

 

           The present study consists of three main objectives : i) to study the participation of Sangha towards community development in Maung District, Sakaeo Province; ii) to comparative study the participation of Sangha towards community development in Maung District, Sakaeo Province; and iii) to study problems and obstacles as well as recommendations in the participation of Sangha towards community development in Maung District, Sakaeo Province. This present study employed a Mixed Method with both Quantitative, with a survey, and qualitative research methodologies. The study sample consisted of 368 out of 1,480 monks who live in area of Maung District, Sakaeo Province. The subjects were recruited based on the sample size of Taro Yamane. The instrument used in data collection was a questionnaire. The data were analyzed in terms of Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation. Inferential statistics of t-test and F-Test were used to determine the differences in mean scores of both groups, and One Way ANOVA was used to determine the differences in mean scores among three groups or more. Finally, the Least Significant Difference (LSD) was employed to test the differences between means of each pair. As for qualitative methodology, in-depth interviews were used with 15 key Informants, and data were analyzed by means of content analysis.

           The study findings revealed that

           1) The overall opinions of people towards Sangha’s participation towards community development in Maung District, Sakaeo Province was at the great level (= 3.90, SD = 0.34). When considering each aspect, it was found that the opinions toward all aspects were at great levels - public health ( = 3.93, SD = 0.39), art and culture ( = 3.92, SD = 0.41), economy and politic and administration (= 3.90, SD = 0.40), and education ( = 3.86, SD = 0.41).

           2) When comparing the opinions of monks toward the participation of Sangha towards community development in Muang District, Sakaeo Province classified by personal factors: age, domicile, level of worldly education, and level of Dhamma education, it was found that it was found that monks with different age and status in monastery had no different opinions toward the participation of Sangha towards community development in Muang District, Sakaeo Province, with statistical significance at 0.05 level denying formulated hypotheses. However, those with different former hometown, level of worldly education, and level of Dhamma education had different opinions toward the participation of Sangha towards community development in Muang District, Sakaeo Province, with statistical significance at 0.05 level accepting formulated hypotheses.

           3) As regards problems and obstacles on the participation of Sangha towards community development in Muang District, Sakaeo Province, it has been found that in aspect of education: some monks lack accessories to support community education; aspect of economy: some monks have no knowledge about the sufficiency economy, cannot be supporter or consult to community; Public Health: monks lack promotion and support of mental health treatment community with the practice; Culture: the promotion of the arts, religion and culture, including traditional and local knowledge of the community, has been passed on; the politics: the monks did not contribute to the problem of meeting the needs of people in the local community.

              As regards recommendations on the participation of Sangha towards community development in Muang District, Sakaeo Province, it is recommended that in aspect of education: there should be support to monks with accessories for community education; aspect of economy: there should be support to monks with knowledge about the sufficiency economy to be supporter or consult to community; Public Health: there should be support to monks with promotion and support of mental health treatment community with the practice; Culture: there should be support the promotion of the arts, religion and culture, including traditional and local knowledge of the community, has been passed on; the politics: there should be support to monks to contribute to the problem of meeting the needs of people in the local community.
