Abstract

 

Abstract

This research paper aims at studying the practice of Dharma in Theravada Buddhism and studying of Nesajjikangadhutanga in Vipassana Meditation Practice of Phraratchasitthachan (Thongbai Pabhassaro) by collecting the research data from Theravada Buddhist texts; Tipitaka, its commentaries, sub-commentaries, Visuddhimagga etc., and collected meditation teachings of Phraratchasitthachan with interviews of persons involved, then bring to compose in describtion, finally verified by experts. From the study, it found that;

Dhutanga-vatta refers to the training course for suppressing defilements which is helpful the Dhutanga observer to increase the efforts more. There are 13 types of Dhutanga such as living with arm-giving, forest dwelling etc. classified into 4 sections; clothing, fooding, shelter and effort which composes of 3 postures except sleeping posture.

 

            Nesajjikangadhutanga means the observing an active practice in only sleeping posture which contains 3 levels; 1) begining level can use backrest, liter made of robe, hammock robe, cushion and chair with 5 or 7 compositions. 2) middle level can use backrest, liter made of robe and chair, among 3 things only one can be used, 3) strict level or effective level can not use backrest, cushion and liter maded of robe, hammock chairs with 5 or 7 compositions.

The most Ven. Phraratchasitthachan (Thongbai Pabhassaro) has chosen Nesajjikangadhutanga practice only 2 levels; midle and austere level in one week and other level in other week for more than 23 years continuously. He also speaks less, recluses with 4 basic needs, not consort with others, bearing patience, having active behavior and not stop his attempts unless he reaches the goal.
