Abstract

This research paper had 2 objectives; 1) to study the history and perfection accumulation of Lakuṇtakabhaddiyathera, 2) to study the Enlightenment of Lakuṇtakabhaddiyathera. The data used in this work has been taken from the primary sources; Tripitaka, it’s commentaries, sub-commentary and other concerned texts, then composed in descriptive style and finally previewed by experts.

From study, it found thatLakuṇtakabhaddiyathera was called as Bhaddiya, because his body smaller and shorter than others so people added ‘Lakuṇtaka’ in front of his name. he was born in merchant family in Savatthi. Having listened sermon of the Buddha, he with great confidence in renunciation, was allowed by the Buddha to ordain as Bhikkhu.  After became a Bhikkhu, he had learned meditation from the Buddha, strived for insight meditation developing with full mindfulness, awareness and great efforts, followed the teaching, finally attained Noble Path and Fruit. The Buddha had give him an excellent position in having pleasant words more than other Bhikkhus due to his pleasant speech.

To achieve dharma means to realize the Four Noble Truths, that is, 4 paths, 4 fruits and Nibbana becoming Sotāpanna, Sakadāgāmī, Anāgāmī and Arahanta. After having ordained, Lakuṇtakabhaddiyathera learned meditation from Buddha and leaved leave to rest in solitude place alone and no longer attained Sotāpanna. Because his physical body is small like a boy with ten years old, so it is laughable to see. There was a prostitute lady just passing by and saw him and then started laughing at him. While she was laughing, he saw the tooth in her mouth, then hold it as a sign of meditative object as dirty, unclean and ugly then attained Anāgāmī.  Later, he heard the teaching from Sariputtathera then his mind liberated from all influxes and reached Arahantaship in final.
