Abstract

             This research paper had 2 objectives; 1) to study the distortion on self in Theravada Buddhist scripture and 2) to study insight development in order to abandon the distortion on self. It was a documentary research by collecting data from Theravada Buddhist scriptures and the other related documents. The researcher then analyzed, summarized, wrote in description and finally having experts to verify its accuracy. The results of study were as follows;

          Attavipallāsa or distortion on self refers to wrong recognizing, wrong thought, wrong view on things which holds the non-self as self driven by desires and wrong views. It ties the man with endless suffering. It is a kind of misunderstanding of the reality therefore to practice insight meditation correctly one must apply mindfulness to observe this reality with wisdom to seeing name and forms as impermanence, suffering and non-self. By continued awariness, his mind releases from attachment on any things as being, person, identity or the self of mine or others. With right mindfulness, one will see his own body and its causes of rise and fall, without desire and wrong views, realized the true characters of all things which fall into Three Common Manners or Tilakkhana. Then having observed the manners of name and forms, he will be fed up in name and forms with insight knowledge based on principle of Foundatoin of Mindfulness starting from Nāmarūpaparichedañāṇa which is wisdom on classifying five aggregates into name and form separately and so on. This was a true insight knowledge which was able to lead one out of attachments and satisfactions without any defilements, i.e. hatred or unsatisfactoriness. No longer his mind will liberate from name and forms clingings with surface, profound defilements together at the same time. This is the way to abandon all roots of suffering which is the complete liberation from self-attachment called as distortion on self.
