Abstract

This dissertation entitled ‘A Study of the Worthy Dhutanga Vatta in Thai Society’ has three objectives: 1) to study the principles and practices of Dhutagavatta in Theravada Buddhism, 2) to study Thai Sangha’s Dhutagavatta in Thai society, and 3) to propose the desirable practical way of Dhutagavatta in the present Thai society. This is a qualitative research done by documentary study, field research and in-depth interview.

In the research, it was found that there are different benefits, both good and bad in the observation of Dhutagavatta. However, when they are approximately taken into account, they give rise to austerity in the utilization of four requisites; one who properly observes Dhutagavatta will not be attached to the clothes, shelter, food and medicine in luxurious manners, one will be easily fed, being mindful and constrained in the Dhutagavatta one decided to follow. In interviewing 11 monks who observe Dhutagavatta in the northern and northeastern regions, it showed that the Buddhist monks’ observation of Dhutagavatta has been giving rise to the religious followers leading to training in patient and mindfulness.
