An Analytical Study of the Buddhist Ethics in the Camadevivamsa Literary Works

Abstract

This research “an analytical study of the Buddhist ethics in the Camadevivamsa literary works” has the following objectives: 1) to study the Camadevivamsa literary works, 2) to study the principles of Buddhist ethics in Theravada Buddhism, 3) to analyze the principles of Buddhist ethics in the Camadevivamsa literary works. It is a qualitative research. The result showed that

A.         Camadevivamsa literary works: it was found that Camadevivamsa is Buddhist scriptures and historical documents which are chronicles that mix historical  and Buddhist stories such as a Buddhist prediction about the construction of city that would be in the future Haripunchai kingdom or Lamphun province in the present. They are also literary works about the background of Haripunchai kingdom from the Buddha’s time until King Athitayaraja and the important roles of Queen Camadevi as the first ruler of Hariphunchai kingdom.

B.         The principles of Buddhist ethics in Theravada Buddhism: it was found that the principles of Buddhist ethics in Theravada Buddhism are the ethical teachings which are the basic way of life as follows: 1. the Basic Buddhist ethics is the five precepts (Sila) that help human beings to control their behaviors or their behaviors should be performed in good ways. 2. The intermediate Buddhist ethics is the ten wholesome courses of action (Kusala-kammapatha) that are the paths leading to goodness. This is a virtue that developed from the five precepts. 3. The high Buddhist ethics is the noble eightfold path which is the path leading to the cessation of suffering as the Buddha himself practiced.

C.         The principles of Buddhist ethics were clearly found in the Camadevivamsa literary works composed of the basic Buddhist ethics was the five precepts (Sila) and the intermediate Buddhist ethics is the ten wholesome courses of action (Kusala-kammapatha), but the high Buddhist ethics is the noble eightfold path was not clearly found in the Camadevivamsa literary works because the Camadevivamsa literary works is the literary works about the construction of city. The The noble eightfold path is the path leading to the cessation of suffering, but the Camadevivamsa is a story about the government by the kings which applies the Buddhist ethics to govern their kingdom.
