A Trend for Developing Peace Engineers Curriculum Integrated Buddhist Perspective: A Case Study of The Doctoral Philosophy Program in Peace Study Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University

Abstract

This research has objectives of 1) to study the current condition and problem in the process work of the peace engineer program according to the doctoral degree in Peace Studies, 2) to study the development of the peace engineer program in terms of modern science and Theravada Buddhism, and 3) to propose a trend for developing the peace engineer program in Buddhist integration. The key informants were selected from both MCU and senior executives in areas of Buddhism, then analytically and descriptively presented the findings.

The findings were:

1. From the SWOT ANALYSIS of the six following aspects, namely:- 1) Academic content, 2) Teaching management, 3) Teaching activities, 4) Educational support media, 5) Evaluation Study, and 6) Lecturers’ qualifications, It was found that the Curriculum had strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and obstacles in each different detail.

2. The theory in modern science that is used was Tyler's theory which is a theory about Learning process that allows people to change behavior, thinking, ability, learning from hearing, touching, reading, using of technology. As for the Buddhist principles used in the curriculum, there are three principles, including the threefold training, the principles of success (brahmavihara), and the special Buddhist principle to break the conflict, namely mindfulness, tolerance and peace. These principles will be used in conjunction with the curriculum in order for the development of life and society.

3. Trends in curriculum development Is in a good direction, in one condition that, if the curriculum could be developed using the Theory of modern science, along with the Buddhist principles presented in the research, in order to exist in the 21st century, it is the need of society.
