Abstract

This research has three objectives: 1) Studying Buddhist thought about the forest resource conservation, 2) Studying thought of Phrasophonpattanodom (Srilao Aggapañño) in forest resource conservation and restoration, and 3) Studying the role of Phrasophonpattanodom (Srilao Aggapañño) in forest resource conservation. This is        a documentary research mainly focused on Tipitaka and their related works including  in-depth interview and observation.

It is found that Buddhist concepts on forest resource conservation were positive and that Buddhism provides teachings that promote the human as one part of nature and that nature is important and vital for human life. Buddhism taught us that the natural environment is beautiful, pleasant, and is one of the factors of happiness. On the other hand, it is the factor of development which includes the thought that the nature is fearful. In the period of Buddha, the Buddha also conserved the natural resource by means of Vinaya or rule for the monks as well as teachings about the forest such as gratitude, kindness and respect, etc.

With reference to the ideas on the forest resource conversation of Phrasophonpattanodom (Srilao Aggapañño) there are five concepts: 1) concept   about the nature, 2) analysis of the causes of destroying the forest resources,          3) concept of resolution to the destroyed forest resource, 4) process of resolution to the forest resource, and 5) conservation and restoration of the forest resource.

The following are six roles about conservation and restoration of the forest by Phrasophonpattanodom (Srilao Aggapañño): 1) the role of creating awareness on environmental conservation, 2) the role as a leader, 3) the role as giving information, 4) the role as linking corporation between government and people, 5) the role as protection of destroying the forest resource, and 6) the role as making restoration of the forest resource.
